Scrabble Tournament, This Friday!
Hey all! Just a reminder that the Scrabble Tournament is coming up this
Friday at 5:00 PM in MGH 420. If you are planning on coming, it’d be really
helpful for us if you could email ischoolscrabble@gmail.com and let us know
that you’ll be there, if you’re bringing anyone (you’re welcome to bring
significant others and friends not in the iSchool!) as well if you’d like to
play as an individual or as a team. Here’s the email we sent out
originally, just in case anyone missed it. We hope to see you there!
Who: iYouth
What: Casual Scrabble tournament — come with just yourself, or play in
teams. You don’t have to be good at Scrabble to have an awesome time.
There will be light snacks, beer, and wine provided. There will also be
fabulous prizes for the best scores, and the best library related words!
Where: Mary Gates Hall 420
When: Friday, October 16th from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM.
Why: All proceeds will go towards Page Ahead (www.pageahead.org), a
non-profit that helps bring books to children across Washington State. This
is a great organization, and it’ll be awesome to help them out.
How: Bring $10 at the door in either cash or check form (make checks out to
iYouth).
If you are planning on attending, it’d be great if you could send an email
to ischoolscrabble@gmail.com with your name and email address. It’d help us
a lot to have a general idea of how many people will be there. We have also
created a facebook event (

INTERNSHIP: Seattle Public Library Chidren’s Center, winter 2010 (SEATTLE, WA)
Directed fieldwork opportunities in the Youth Services (Children and Teen Centers) Department at the Central Library for Winter quarter.
Description:
This student will be working with the Youth Services Manager and the Early Learning Specialist to create an evaluation tool for the Begin With Books collection. The Begin With Books collection is part of the Seattle Public Library’s Early Learning initiative. The person in this position will also support the Global Reading Challenge program. The GRC is one of the most wide reaching programs that the Seattle Public Library offers. It is a highly motivating reading program for over 1,500 4th and 5th grade students in the Seattle Public Schools. http://globalreadingchallenge.wikispaces.com/Seattle+Public+Library
A complete overview of the program will be provided. If time permits, there may be an opportunity to develop an evaluation tool for this program also.
This Directed Field Work student may have opportunities to observe and present story times for babies, toddler or preschool audiences, and to attend a Children’s Services Meeting if interested.
The student interested in this position may propose additional experiences when designing the Directed Fieldwork learning objectives with the Youth Services Manager.
Required and preferred skills:
Coursework or experience evaluating library programs – required
Prior experience working independently with little supervisory direction – required
Self starter – experience organizing own work – required
Experience working with children and/or coursework in children’s services –required
A strong interest in library programming preferred

iYouth Contest: Name our conference and win free admission!
On Saturday, January 30th, 2010 from 9am-3:30pm, iYouth will have its 2nd
annual conference for students, school librarians, public librarians,
authors, and anyone interested in children and teen librarianship. The
conference will feature a keynote address with Nancy Pearl in addition to
sessions on storytelling, booktalking, radical change, a teen technology
panel, and more! The price of admission is only $15 for students and $25
for professionals.
But we still need a name! Come up with a name for the conference and e-mail
it to iyouthuw@u.washington.edu or esterlin@uw.edu by *Friday, October 9th
at midnight*. If we pick your suggestion, you will win free admission to the
conference. Notifications will be made on Monday night.
